table-01_a-5.jpg We know how important your child’s smile is, and we want to help you and your family stay healthy. Your family’s dental health begins at home. You and your family can preserve oral health for a lifetime with healthy eating habits, good oral hygiene and regular visits to our Hillsborough Family Dentistry office or Village Pointe Dentistry office in Omaha, Nebraska. Our highly skilled staff is trained in all areas of general dentistry from cavity prevention to periodontal disease treatment. Here are some tips on how to keep your family healthy between dental visits:

Healthy Diet
Diet is just as important for your family’s teeth as it is for the rest of your family’s health. Be selective about the foods you and your family eats. It’s important to maintain a balanced diet and limit snacking. Every time a family member snacks on sugary or starchy foods, acids attack the teeth for 20 minutes or more. When eating a full meal, saliva is generated aiding in keeping the mouth healthy by washing away food debris reducing the damaging effects of acids. A healthy diet includes nutritious foods from the five major food groups:
  • Grain products including breads and cereals
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Meat, poultry and fish
  • Dairy products including milk cheese and yogurt
When your family does snack, encourage healthy choices such as raw vegetables, fruit, plain yogurt and cheese. Here are some foods to avoid:

  • Sugary soft drinks and diet drinks
  • Sports drinks and excessive fruit drinks
  • Coffee and tea with sugar
  • Chocolate and candy – especially hard candy that takes a long time to dissolve
  • Large quantities of dried fruit – they’re loaded with sugar
  • Excessive citrus drinks – loaded with acid

Teeth become vulnerable to decay when the food makes contact with bacteria.  Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up and breaks down the tooth’s protective enamel and leading to decay. If your child indulges in a sugary sweet, a cavity can start to form within 72 hours snacking. It’s vital to brush with fluoride toothpaste immediately after snacking to avoid damage. Tooth decay will eventually destroy teeth and supporting bone if left untreated.

Daily Oral Care
Children will follow their parent’s good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to remove food particles between the teeth. Talk to the general dentist at the Hillsborough Family Dentistry, Village Pointe Dentistry and Spring Valley Dental offices about the most effective brushing technique for you and your family’s oral health. We’ll happy to show your child how to brush properly.

Dentist Visits
And don’t forget to see us at our Hillsborough Family Dentistry office or Village Pointe Dentistry office at least every 6 months. Tartar accumulates every 3 to 6 months on the tooth’s surface. A regular professional cleaning is the only way to get rid of it. We’ll also check your child’s gums for early signs of periodontal disease. Gum diseases have few symptoms and can cause serious problems if not diagnosed and treated early.
